Is Paphos Worth Visiting in Winter?

Cyprus is a year-round destination, and in winter time, it offers you a chance to escape to the sun, with good weather pretty much guaranteed.

Winter is actually my favourite time on the island because its much more peaceful, but you can still enjoy really pleasant temperatures for as late as start of December.

Popular attractions and historical locations are not as busy, and winter time is the perfect season to capture some stunning sunsets and travel photos without other tourists in them.

The more relaxed atmosphere extends to the beaches, towns, and hiking trails too, which makes it easier to connect with the local culture and nature.

If you’re planning your trip for winter, I am confident you have nothing to worry about! But just in case, I have also added some activities for rainy days!

Paphos Winter: The Best Things To Do

1. Explore the Paphos Archaeological Park

One of the most important attractions in Paphos, the Archaeological Park, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. In winter, it’s especially pleasant to visit as the site is quite large, and it’s best explored when the weather is milder.

The park is home to some of the best-preserved ancient ruins in the Mediterranean, dating back to the Roman period.

It is open daily from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM, and you can check the ticket prices here.

Key Highlights:

  • Mosaic Floors: The park is famous for its intricate mosaic floors, particularly in the House of Dionysus, which depict scenes from Greek mythology.
  • The Odeon: A well-preserved Roman theatre that is still used for performances today.

Why Visit in Winter? During winter, the park is less crowded, allowing you to take your time exploring and photographing the ruins.

The cooler temperatures make it an ideal time to wander around without the fatigue that comes from the summer heat.

2. Wander Through Paphos Old Town

Paphos Old Town, also known as Ktima, offers a charming mix of traditional Cypriot architecture, modern art, and cultural experiences.

The winter months are perfect for leisurely exploring its narrow streets without the usual summer crowds.

Highlights:

  • Street Art: Paphos was the European Capital of Culture in 2017, and this has left a lasting impact on the city’s urban landscape. The Old Town is adorned with colorful murals and street art, making it a vibrant area to explore.
  • Museums: The Old Town is home to several small museums, including the Ethnographic Museum, which showcases traditional Cypriot life, and the Municipal Gallery of Contemporary Art. These indoor activities are perfect for a cooler winter day.
  • Markets and Cafés: Winter is a great time to visit the local markets where you can buy handmade crafts, fresh produce, and local delicacies. Warm up in a cozy café with a cup of traditional Cypriot coffee.

Family-Friendly:

The relaxed pace of the Old Town, combined with its cultural and artistic offerings, makes it an ideal spot for families to explore together.

3. Visit the Paphos Castle and Harbor

Paphos Castle, located at the edge of the harbor, served as an old defense fortress. Checking out the castle makes for a pleasant stroll alongside the promenade, and you can stop in one of the restaurants in the harbour for a drink or lunch.

What to Do:

  • Get Inside: Climb to the top of the castle for panoramic views of the harbor and the surrounding coastline.
  • Harbor Stroll: After visiting the castle, take a leisurely stroll along the harbor. The winter atmosphere is peaceful, with fewer tourists and a more relaxed vibe. You can enjoy watching the fishing boats come and go or stop at one of the waterfront cafes for a warm drink.

Free Activity:

Walking around the harbor and enjoying the views is free, and the castle entry is very cheap, so it’s a fairly low cost activity.

4. Explore the Akamas Peninsula

For nature lovers, the Akamas Peninsula is a must-visit destination during the winter months.

This protected area is one of Cyprus’s most unspoiled and beautiful regions, offering a range of outdoor activities. It’s where I spend a lot of my weekends and free time, enjoying the beautiful nature without any crowds.

Key Attractions:

  • Hiking: The Akamas Peninsula boasts several well-marked trails, including the popular Aphrodite and Adonis trails. These trails offer breathtaking views of the rugged coastline, lush forests, and the crystal-clear waters of the Mediterranean.
  • Lara Beach: Known for its turtle conservation efforts, Lara Beach is a secluded spot where you can enjoy a quiet winter walk along the shore.
  • Baths of Aphrodite: According to legend, this natural grotto is where Aphrodite used to bathe. The site is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers a peaceful spot to rest during your hike.

Why Winter? The cooler temperatures make hiking more enjoyable, and the likelihood of spotting wildlife, such as birds and turtles, is higher.

Winter is also an excellent time for photography, with the soft lighting and fewer visitors providing ideal conditions.

Hidden in the hills above Paphos, the Adonis Baths Waterfalls are a beautiful and tranquil retreat. According to Greek mythology, this was a favorite spot of Adonis and Aphrodite.

What to Do:

  • Swimming: If you’re feeling adventurous, you can take a dip in the natural pools at the base of the waterfalls. While the water may be cooler in winter, the experience is refreshing and invigorating.
  • Scenic Views: The area surrounding the waterfalls is lush and green, offering several spots for a picnic or simply to relax and enjoy the natural beauty.

6. Visit the St. Paul’s Pillar and the Panagia Chrysopolitissa

Located near the Paphos harbor, the site of St. Paul’s Pillar and the Panagia Chrysopolitissa Church is a significant religious and historical landmark.

What to See:

  • St. Paul’s Pillar: According to tradition, this is the pillar where St. Paul was flogged before converting the Roman governor to Christianity. The site is a place of pilgrimage and offers a deep sense of history and spirituality.
  • Panagia Chrysopolitissa: This beautiful Byzantine church, built in the 13th century, features well-preserved mosaics and a serene atmosphere. The church is still in use today and is an example of the island’s rich religious heritage.

Free Activity:

Visiting the site is free, making it an excellent option for budget-conscious travelers.

7. Take a Day Trip to the Troodos Mountains

A day trip to the Troodos Mountains is an ideal winter activity, offering a complete contrast to the coastal environment of Paphos.

The Troodos region is known for its picturesque villages, Byzantine monasteries, and even the possibility of snow in the higher altitudes.

If you want to ski, you need to head all the way to the top towards Mount Olympus, and make sure you check the updates about weather conditions – the road gets very slippery after snowfalls and they don’t always clear them up too quickly.

See some photos from my last snow adventures below.

Highlights:

  • Kykkos Monastery: One of the wealthiest and most famous monasteries in Cyprus, Kykkos is known for its stunning mosaics, frescoes, and the icon of the Virgin Mary, which is believed to perform miracles.
  • Traditional Villages: Explore the charming villages of Omodos, Kakopetria, and Platres, where you can enjoy traditional Cypriot hospitality, taste local wines, and purchase handmade crafts.
  • Skiing: If you’re lucky enough to visit during a snowfall, the Troodos Mountains offer skiing opportunities. While the facilities are modest, the experience of skiing in Cyprus is a unique winter treat.

Why Visit in Winter? The cooler mountain air and the possibility of seeing snow make the Troodos Mountains a magical winter destination.

8. Visit the Sanctuary of Aphrodite at Kouklia

Located just a short drive from Paphos, the Sanctuary of Aphrodite in Kouklia village is not very well known and not many people venture there, which is a shame!

This ancient temple complex was dedicated to the worship of Aphrodite, the goddess of love and beauty, who was believed to have been born in Cyprus.

You can see the remains of the temple and they also have a cool museum – perfect for a rainy day activity.

What to Do:

  • Explore the Ruins: Wander through the remains of the ancient sanctuary, which include the foundations of the temple, altars, and other structures.
  • Visit the Museum: The small museum on site houses artifacts discovered in the area, including statues, pottery, and inscriptions.
  • Scenic Views: The sanctuary is set in a beautiful location with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, making it a peaceful and picturesque place to visit.

9. Enjoy Wine Tasting in the Paphos Region

Cyprus is one of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world, and the Paphos area is home to some of the island’s most renowned wineries.

Winter is a great time to explore the local wine culture, as the cooler temperatures make for a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

What to Do:

  • Visit Local Wineries: Many wineries in the Paphos region offer tours and tastings, allowing you to sample a variety of Cypriot wines, including the famous Commandaria, one of the world’s oldest wines. Check Vouni Panayia or Fikardos Winery.
  • Learn About the Wine-Making Process: On a winery tour, you’ll learn about the traditional and modern methods used in Cypriot wine production. The best place for an educational tour is Kolios Winery.
  • Explore Wine Villages: The Paphos region is dotted with charming wine villages, such as Kathikas and Stroumpi, where you can stroll through picturesque streets, visit local wine cellars, and enjoy traditional Cypriot hospitality.

Why Winter? Winter is the perfect time for a cozy wine-tasting experience. The vineyards are quieter, the tasting rooms offer a warm and inviting atmosphere, and the surrounding countryside is lush and green.

10. Best Rainy Day Activities

Paphos doesn’t have too many museums or places for indoor entertainment; as a true Mediterranean destination, it’s all about the outdoor life.

However, here are a few options you can consider for rainy days:

  • Paphos Ethnographic Museum: Explore local culture and traditions through a diverse collection of art, crafts, and historical artifacts.
  • Pottery Workshops: Get hands-on with pottery classes at local studios. This creative activity is a great way to learn about Cypriot craftsmanship.
  • Plan a Day Trip: Weather conditions vary almost by city, so you can potential drive away from the rain if you head over to the other side of the island or the villages in the mountains.
  • Check Local Monasteries and Churches: Paphos has a few lovely churches (mentioned earlier) and also very own monastery in the hills next to the village of Tala, called Agios Neophytos.
  • Kings Avenue Mall: Spend time shopping, catching a movie, or enjoying a meal in the spacious, modern mall, offering a variety of shops, restaurants, and a cinema.
  • Wine Tasting Tours: Experience Cypriot wines at an indoor tasting session. Several wineries in the area offer guided tastings and tours of their facilities.

Travel Tips for Visiting Cyprus in Winter

When visiting Cyprus in winter, it’s essential to be prepared for the island’s mild yet occasionally rainy weather by packing layers and a light, waterproof jacket.

Remember that even when the temperatures can be very pleasant during the day, it can be still very cold early in the mornings and late in the evenings. By the sea, you will obviously feel much colder thanks to the wind.

Remember that Cyprus uses the British-style three-pin plug, so bring an appropriate adapter for your electronics.

If you plan to rent a car, note that driving is on the left side of the road, same to the UK.

The roads are generally in good condition, and winter offers less traffic, making driving a convenient way to explore the island’s scenic routes and hidden gems.
