Planning a getaway to Paphos in Cyprus?

You’re in the right place!

I have been living in Paphos for 6.5 years and absolutely love the place. I’ve explored everything it has to offer, from the well-known spots to hidden gems only locals know about.

In this article, I wanted to share some of the most stunning places to appreciate the Paphos aesthetic and some insider photography tips.

Let’s get started!

Cyprus Photography Tips

If you’re traveling to Paphos, you’re in real photographer’s paradise.

Here are some tips to help you make the most of your photography adventure in Paphos.

First, timing is everything.

The golden hour—shortly after sunrise and before sunset—casts a warm, soft light that allows you to capture the scenery in the best light.

Second, explore the narrow streets of Kato Paphos, where traditional Cypriot architecture provides a charming backdrop. Look for interesting details like colorful doors, window shutters, and local street art that embody the Paphos aesthetic.

Don’t forget the coastline.

Capture the dramatic cliffs of the coastline in Paphos, you will find the best spots (similar to the photos above) in the area around Kissonerga. Using a wide-angle lens will allow you to emphasize the vastness of the sea and sky, creating breathtaking landscape shots.

Lastly, interact with locals. Candid shots of people going about their daily lives can add a human element to your collection, telling a more complete story of Paphos.

With these tips, your photos will reflect the unique charm and beauty of Paphos, making your memories even more vivid.

Beautiful Places to Visit and Photograph

So where do you find the best photo opportunities?

As I mentioned already, Paphos is really photo friendly and you won’t struggle no matter where you go. The main issue will be in the main tourist season in the summer, where you will see people everywhere and it will be hard capturing photos without them.

If you want authentic and really serene looking photos, I recommend heading out early in the morning, before the sunrise, to capture the city before the locals wake up.

Similarly, Akamas Peninsula is a great place to capture the best sunset photos without many people in them!

Here are some other suggestions!

1. Paphos Archaeological Park

This is a pretty easy and convenient choice for photography, especially if you venture there late in the afternoon or before sunset.

You can actually walk all the way to the sea through the park, and enjoy beautiful views of the sunset! Just keep in mind the opening hours – sunset spotting from here might only be possible in winter.

The park is open daily from 8:30 AM to 7:30 PM, and you can check the ticket prices here.

2. Aphrodite’s Rock (Petra tou Romiou)

Aphrodite’s Rock is one of the most iconic landmarks in Cyprus. According to legend, this is the birthplace of Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love and beauty.

This rock in the middle of the sea is located a short drive away from Paphos, just off the highway towards Limassol.

Keep in mind its a popular spot for local tours, so you might get unlucky and visit when there is a whole bus of tourists unloading.

If you don’t want to drive, you can check out the tour option below.

Best time to visit this place is off season, or early in the morning, as it is quite popular for late afternoons and sunset.

3. Tombs of the Kings

Tombs of the Kings is another UNESCO-listed site in Paphos, offering a unique insight into the burial practices of the Hellenistic and Roman periods.

Carved into the solid rock, these impressive underground tombs are adorned with Doric columns and frescoes. Despite the name, the tombs were actually used for high-ranking officials rather than kings.

This ancient site is much smaller compared to the archaeological park, and feels much more natural. The burial grounds offers some unique photo opportunities – see my photos below.

4. Akamas Peninsula National Park

For nature lovers, the Akamas Peninsula is a must-visit. This protected area is known for its rugged landscapes, secluded beaches, and diverse wildlife. It offers the best views and sceneries just a short drive away from Paphos.

The Akamas Peninsula is also home to the Baths of Aphrodite, a natural grotto where the goddess is said to have bathed.

From Paphos, head towards Latchi where I recommend stopping for a lunch in the harbor, and then continue towards the Baths of Aphrodite where you can park. From there you can explore on foot and hike the popular Aphrodite Trail.

Right next to Baths of Aphrodite is a small restaurant with gorgeous views and a natural beach right below it (the food is quite good too!) – see photos below.

5. Coral Bay & Peyia Sea Caves

Coral Bay has of the most beautiful beaches in Paphos, known for its golden sands and clear turquoise waters. Coral Bay has also been my home for many years, so I explored the area extensively.

Right next to the golden beach of Coral Bay is an area called Peyia, with beautiful coastline where you can also find natural caves.

If you want to combine seeing the caves with dining, I recommend a trip to Oniro by the Sea, a beautiful restaurant overlooking the sea caves and a shipwreck!

6. Paphos Old Town (Ktima)

Paphos Old Town, also known as Ktima, is a charming area filled with narrow streets, historic buildings, and vibrant markets.

The town square is a great place to start, surrounded by cafes and shops selling local crafts and souvenirs.

The Old Town has undergone significant renovations in recent years, blending traditional Cypriot architecture with modern touches, and even some wonderful street art! (see below)

Best time to explore with your camera is early in the mornings.

Where to Stay in Paphos

Paphos offers a range of accommodations to suit all budgets and preferences.

If you’re looking for luxury, you will enjoy high-end resorts like the Elysium Hotel and the Annabelle Hotel, which offer top-notch amenities and stunning views.

For more budget-friendly options, there are numerous boutique hotels and guesthouses, such as the Almyra Hotel and Dionysos Central Hotel, providing comfortable stays with excellent service.

You can also find various airbnb options all around Paphos, and for those who would prefer a villa with a private pool, I recommend checking out the area of Coral Bay and Peyia, where you would get the best deals and very convenient locatin.

Tips for Traveling to Cyprus

When traveling to Cyprus, there are a few important tips to keep in mind.

Cyprus uses Type G electrical sockets, the same as in the UK, so if you’re coming from a country with different plugs, you’ll need an adapter.

Driving is on the left side of the road, ame to the UK, and renting a car is one of the best ways to explore the island, though rural roads can be narrow and winding.

The local currency is the Euro (€), and while credit and debit cards are widely accepted, it’s a good idea to carry some cash, especially in rural areas.

Greek is predominantly spoken in Paphos, but English is widely understood, so communication shouldn’t be an issue.

Cyprus is a safe destination, but standard travel precautions apply, such as keeping an eye on your belongings.

Lastly, the locals are known for their hospitality, so be sure to greet them politely and respect local customs, especially when visiting religious sites where modest dress is expected.
