From festive markets with local products, and beautiful Christmas decorations to unique local traditions, Paphos truly offers a blend of Cypriot warmth and festive cheer that’s hard to resist!
In this article, you will find some insights on the local customs and traditions around Christmas, along with my tips for things to do and events planned for Christmas 2024!
Let’s dive in!
What’s Christmas Like in Paphos?
Christmas in Paphos is unique because of its mild winter weather and mostly sunny days, so you can spend the Christmas morning celebrating on the beach!
While you won’t find snow-covered streets or freezing temperatures, the cool Mediterranean climate brings a refreshing change from the summer heat.
If you do miss the snow, you can simply head towards the Troodos Mountains where you will find the snow-covered peak of Mount Olympus for most of the winter period.
Daytime temperatures typically range between 15°C to 20°C (59°F to 68°F), making it pleasant for outdoor activities.
Paphos in winter is much quieter, and some establishments will close for the season from November until March, so you will find it very peaceful.
Cypriot Christmas Traditions
The main religion in Cyprus is Greek Orthodox Christian (for the Greek community), while the Turkish-Cypriot population is Muslim.
The celebrations kick off on December 6th with St. Nicholas Day and continue until Epiphany on January 6th. Here are some key traditions to look out for.
1. Christmas Eve (Παραμονή Χριστουγέννων)
On Christmas Eve, families attend the midnight Mass, known as “Mesonyktiki,” at local churches. The atmosphere is reverent and spiritual, with the church bells ringing to mark Christ’s birth.
After the service, returning home for a festive meal is common.
Traditional Cypriot dishes like “kleftiko” (slow-cooked lamb) and “souvla” (grilled meat) are often served, accompanied by “kourabiedes” (almond cookies) and “melomakarona” (honey-soaked cookies).
2. Christmas Day (Χριστούγεννα)
Christmas Day is a time for family gatherings.
Cypriots typically enjoy a large feast, with dishes such as roast turkey, “loukaniko” (Cypriot sausage), and “soutzoukakia” (meatballs in tomato sauce) making an appearance on the table.
Gift-giving is also an essential part of the celebration, with children eagerly awaiting their presents.
3. New Year’s Eve (Παραμονή Πρωτοχρονιάς)
New Year’s Eve is celebrated with lively parties, fireworks, and plenty of food and drink.
A traditional cake called “Vasilopita” is baked, with a coin hidden inside. Whoever finds the coin is said to have good luck for the coming year.
4. Epiphany (Θεοφάνεια)
On January 6th, Paphos celebrates Epiphany, marking the baptism of Christ.
Cypriot Christmas Food and Treats
Christmas in Paphos is also a time to indulge in local delicacies that are only available during the holiday season. Here are some treats you shouldn’t miss:
1. Kourabiedes
These almond shortbread cookies are dusted with powdered sugar and melt in your mouth. They are a staple in every Cypriot household during Christmas.
2. Melomakarona
Melomakarona are honey-soaked cookies flavored with cinnamon and orange, often topped with chopped walnuts. They are incredibly addictive and a must-try during the festive season.
3. Souvla
While not specific to Christmas, “souvla” (large chunks of meat slow-cooked on a spit) is often prepared for festive gatherings. It’s a dish that embodies the communal spirit of Cypriot cuisine.
4. Commandaria
This sweet dessert wine, known as the “wine of kings,” is the perfect drink to accompany your Christmas dessert. Commandaria is a historic wine with a rich, raisin-like flavor that pairs well with festive treats.
